Nearing the Summit of Mount Lowe, Mid-1920s

En route to the summit of Mount Lowe, this well-dressed hiker pauses near a patch of snow with Mt. Markham in the background. She is almost to the summit and just might be aware that the peak behind her was named for California’s 18th Governor, Henry Harrison Markham, who resided in Pasadena following the Civil War until his passing in 1923 (he is interred at Mountain View Cemetery, within several yards from Thaddeus SC Lowe’s family burial plot). Markham could well have been alive when this photo was taken.

  1. I have a copy of Mount Lowe Daily News which includes the visitors today on January 15, 1921 listing my grandparents. They must have enjoyed a grand vacation from their home in Nebraska.
